2008 NINE'S WEATHERMAN BRENTON RAGLESS HEADS BACK TO BLACKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL TO INSPIRE STUDENTS

Channel Nine news weather presenter Brenton Ragless headed back to school on Friday, 23 May in support of the seventh annual Back to School campaign - a national program which provides public education students with inspirational role models in the form of previous students.

Brenton addressed the year 8 Blackwood High School students about his days at school and his journey to becoming Nine's weekday weatherman and had a special question and answer session with the SRC.

The campaign which is held throughout the month of May, sees former public school students go back to their school to share their stories in order to provide inspiration to current students. In addition, the campaign profiles the success of public education by highlighting the achievements of past students.

Back to School is one of the largest volunteering initiatives in Australian public schools. Over 2,000 schools across the country have participated in Back to School over the past six years. More than 6,500 former students have returned to their schools to inspire an estimated half a million young people.

For Brenton being a part of the Back To School campaign was an opportunity to connect with today's students and encourage them to reach their future potential.

He explains, "While I was at school, I would have loved having former students come to offer their thoughts on what to expect and to pass on some of their experience.

"I hope I was able to pass on some encouragement for those that may be feeling a little uncertain about their future and to build some excitement for what they have to look forward to.

"It was a real buzz to be given a platform to do that."

Back to School is run by Education Foundation Australia, an independent non-profit organisation that has for the past 18 years supported the education of young people in public schools. The Education Foundation's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Adam Smith, said "The Back to School campaign makes a valuable contribution to our future as it can enhance a student's perception of their school, community and potential. It is the only event of its kind that; connects former students with their public schools in order to inspire today's students, acknowledges the school's role in the local community and builds an alumni that can act as an ongoing support network for the school."
